编者按：协和医院中西合璧的建筑群中，凝结着一位美国建筑师百年前的中国情怀。当这段记忆在一个美国女孩的心中苏醒，我们看到的，不仅是个体命运的奇妙回响，更是跨越时空的文化共鸣。在由中国宋庆龄基金会主办的“文化小大使”国际交流活动中，娜娜（Clementina Coolidge Deane）向我们讲述了这段历经百年的家族故事。

17岁的美国女孩娜娜是第一次来到中国。采访前，娜娜刚刚参观了故宫。这座承载着六百余年历史的皇家宫殿让她惊叹不已：“看到这些几百年前的建筑，我觉得古代人真的很了不起。”娜娜的话语里难掩兴奋，她尤其提到一点：“我最喜欢的颜色就是黄色了。在故宫看到那么多的黄色，我很开心。”

靠在一旁的父亲静静地听着女儿的表述，眼神里满是鼓励与骄傲。

这趟中国之行，对娜娜来说不仅是一次文化体验，更像是一段家族情感的回溯。因为她的曾曾外祖父，正是著名的北京协和医院的建筑师——Charles Allerton Coolidge。20世纪初，他与团队一起为中国设计了这所医学院。Charles潜心研习传统中国建筑语汇，将琉璃瓦、飞檐等中国传统建筑元素与西方建筑理念融合，打造出这座中西合璧的建筑杰作。

Charles与中国之间珍贵的情谊并没有被岁月抹去。娜娜的父亲不久前曾去参观协和医院，“那里的历史研究者认出了我父亲的姓氏Coolidge。”娜娜分享这个细节时，脸上满是自豪。

在家庭的影响下，娜娜开始了解并学习中国文化。此次中国行中，娜娜还近距离感受了京剧的魅力。“在宋庆龄故居，我们学习了京剧中的手势，还穿了戏服！”她一边说，一边自然地翘起手指比划给我们看“我很喜欢‘兰花指’，它让我看起来很优雅。”

“你以后还想来中国吗？”我们问她。

“当然想！”娜娜回答得毫不犹豫，“我想来中国学习。如果我学医学的话，或许我可以去我曾曾外祖父设计的医院学习。”说到这儿，她又调皮地笑了笑，“但是我想我不会这么做，因为我更喜欢文学。我希望有机会多来中国，交更多中国的朋友。”

采访过程中，我们不止一次被娜娜的真诚打动。她对中国文化的热爱，既来自对家族故事的延续，也源于属于她们这一代年轻人的好奇与探索。

建筑是凝固的历史，而文化在流动中传承。屋顶的琉璃瓦依旧明亮，协和医院也一如Charles设想的那样在中国医学界发挥着重要的作用。如今，Charles的后代沿着祖辈的足迹来到中国，带着相同的热爱，用另一种方式延续这段跨世纪的对话，为这个美国家族的中国故事添了新的一页。

在全球化复杂多变的今天，娜娜的故事或许并不孤单。正如她所展现的那样，来自不同国度的青少年，正在通过旅行、艺术、学习等方式，感受并爱上彼此的文化。这种情感，不需要太多宏大的叙述，它闪烁在相视一笑的默契里，沉淀在指尖触碰的温度中，也融入到那句简单却真挚的“我喜欢”里。

A Cross-Cultural Dialogue Spanning a Century: An Unfinished China-U.S. Conversation 

Editor's Note: The Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), with its blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, embodies the deep affection an American architect held for China a century ago. When this memory is reawakened in the heart of a young American girl, what we see is not only the wondrous echo of individual destinies, but also a cross-temporal cultural resonance. At the Junior Cultural Ambassadors international exchange event hosted by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, Clementina Coolidge Deane, or Nana, shared this century-old family story with us. 

Seventeen-year-old American girl Nana was visiting China for the first time. Before the interview, Nana had just visited the Forbidden City. This royal palace, with over six hundred years of history, left her amazed: "Seeing these centuries-old buildings, I think the ancient people were truly remarkable." Nana's words barely concealed her excitement, and she particularly mentioned, "My favorite color is yellow. I was so happy to see so much yellow in the Forbidden City." Her father, leaning nearby, quietly listened to his daughter's description, his eyes full of encouragement and pride. 

This trip to China for Nana was not just a cultural experience, but also a tracing back of family sentiment. This is because her great-great-grandfather was Charles Allerton Coolidge, the architect of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. In the early 20th century, he and his team designed this medical college for China. Charles diligently studied traditional Chinese architectural vocabulary, integrating elements like glazed tiles（琉璃瓦） and flying eaves（飞檐） with Western architectural concepts to create this architectural masterpiece that blends Chinese and Western styles. 

The precious friendship between Charles and China has not been erased by time. Nana's father recently visited PUMCH, and "the historical researchers there recognized my father's surname, Coolidge." Nana's face was full of pride as she shared this detail. 

Under the influence of her family, Nana began to understand and learn about Chinese culture. During this trip to China, Nana also experienced the charm of Beijing Opera up close. "At the Soong Ching Ling Former Residence, we learned Peking Opera gestures and even wore costumes!" she said, naturally curling her fingers to show us, "I really like the 'orchid finger' gesture; it makes me look very elegant." 

"Do you want to come to China again in the future?" we asked her. 

"Of course I do!" Nana answered without hesitation. "I want to come to China to study. If I study medicine, perhaps I could go to the hospital my great-great-grandfather designed." At this, she playfully smiled again, "But I don't think I'll do that because I prefer literature. I hope to have more opportunities to come to China and make more Chinese friends." 

During the interview, we were touched by Nana's sincerity more than once. Her love for Chinese culture comes both from the continuation of a family story and from the curiosity and exploration unique to her generation of young people. 

Architecture is solidified history, while culture is passed down through flow. The glazed tiles on the roof remain bright, and PUMCH continues to play an important role in the Chinese medical field, just as Charles envisioned. Today, Charles's descendants have followed in their ancestor's footsteps to China, carrying the same passion, and in another way, continuing this cross-century dialogue, adding a new page to this American family's Chinese story. 

In today's complex and ever-changing globalization, Nana's story may not be unique. As she demonstrated, young people from different countries are experiencing and falling in love with each other's cultures through travel, art, and learning. This emotion needs no grand narratives; it shines in shared smiles, the warmth of a touch, and the simple sincerity of 'I like it.' 

And this is precisely the original intention that our Inquiring Youth, Inheriting Culture（青衿问道，文脉传承） column team has always insisted on documenting and disseminating – to let the exchange between Chinese culture and the cultures of various nations take root in true stories and resonate in sincere emotions.
